National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to remember the importance of online safety and educate others on protecting their personal and financial information. With increasing digital purchases and online banking, it’s crucial to stay informed about potential threats and how to mitigate them. Here are some key practices to strengthen your cybersecurity and safeguard your finances.

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords - One of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your online accounts is by using strong, unique passwords. Avoid using easily guessed passwords like "123456" or "password." Instead, create passwords that are at least 12 characters long and include a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager to help you generate and store complex passwords securely.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) - Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your accounts. It typically requires not only your password but also a second form of verification, such as a text message code or an authentication app. Enabling 2FA can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your accounts. NEVER share your 2FA code with anyone.

3. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly - Set aside time each month to check your accounts for any discrepancies. Regularly reviewing your Online Banking, Mobile Banking or E-Statements can help you spot unauthorized transactions early. Fairmont FCU also offers Debit Card Activity Alerts for transactions, providing real-time notifications of activity.

4. Be Wary of Phishing Scams - Phishing scams often come in the form of emails, calls, or messages that appear to be from legitimate sources, asking for personal information. Always verify the sender's contact method and avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. If you receive a suspicious message from someone, contact them directly using a confirmed method of contact to ensure the messages legitimacy. Fairmont Federal Credit Union will NEVER send an UNSOLICITED call, email, or text asking for important account information. DO NOT click on unfamiliar links, give out personal information, or respond to unexpected texts. EVER.

5. Use Secure Connections - When accessing your accounts, ensure that you're using a secure internet connection. Avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking transactions or sensitive activities. If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet traffic.

6. Stay Informed – Staying informed on current fraud and scam tactics is essential to financial success. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated in their tactics to exploit people. From phishing schemes to investment frauds, it's hard to navigate the landscape of potential scams. Understanding the red flags and staying vigilant are crucial steps to safeguarding yourself from falling prey to scams in the digital age.

As Cybersecurity Awareness Month unfolds, take the opportunity to reassess your online security practices. By implementing these strategies, you can help protect your financial information and enjoy peace of mind in an increasingly digital world. Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and staying informed is a BIG step toward protecting your finances.
